Last Teleseminar for the Summer

First, I owe you all an apology for taking so long to get this recording posted.  But here it is – finally!  Rick and I did our best in the call to cover as many questions as possible.  We definitely covered a lot of ground.  I hope as you listen that you will find that your concerns were addressed.  If not, check out our previous calls.  You will probably find what you need in  at least one of them.

Call #17: Questions…So Many Questions

It is our hope that in the last few months we have provided you with plenty of information to help you in your job search.   If you listen to all the recordings and don’t find the answer you need, feel free to post your question here on the blog.  I will get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.

In the meantime, please have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Last Night’s Call and a News Flash

Hi, Everyone!

Last night, Rick and I talked about the issue of time gaps in your resume – and how to handle them effectively.  The biggest takeaway from the discussion was that you don’t have to be too specific about such breaks.  There are several ways to minimize their effect, including using the resume format that we encourage because it puts the focus on your skills and the value you bring to a company.  This should more than compensate for any periods that you weren’t employed.

We also revisited the age discrimination subject because we continue to get questions about it.  I hope that the additional "ammo" we provided will help those of you who are facing this challenge (I was going to say "problem" but we want to keep this discussion positive;-)).

Anyway, here is the link to the recording so you can catch up on what you might have missed.

Call #16:Resume Time Gaps + More on Age Discrimination

As for the "News Flash", we wanted to let you know that we have decided to do next week’s call and then break it off for the rest of the summer.  However, we won’t be leaving you high and dry.  The blog will remain active so job seekers will still have access to all the materials we’ve been covering over the last few months.  So please continue to use and tell your friends about this resource.

Given that it will be our last one for awhile, Rick and I have decided to devote the entire hour next week to Q&A.  Therefore, be sure to take this opportunity to register and ask about the issue(s) that are most important to you.

Teleseminar Recording for May 26, 2009

Rick and I appreciate all of you who participated on tonight’s call.  Just so you know, the system that I use to monitor the online calls was not working properly this time.  Because of that, I have no idea how many were actually listening in.  Fortunately, all the other important features appeared to be functioning so I don’t believe the call itself was affected.  However, you can decide for yourself.  Here is the recording, hot off the presses!

Call #15: Staying Encouraged During a Prolonged Job Search

We welcome any comments or questions you might have on tonight’s topic.  Just type them into the box provided below.  Thanks.

Memorial Day Weekend 2009

I hope you are enjoying your Memorial Day weekend.  Mine has been eventful.  My family and I just returned from Austin where we watched my oldest daughter graduate from The University of Texas.

Boy, has that become a production – much bigger than when I graduated from there lo so many years ago!  The evening ceremony in front of the Tower is now a major event, ending in a huge fireworks display.  They even managed to keep changing the color of the tower throughout the evening, ending with the famous burnt orange.  For awhile, rain threatened to cancel the whole thing but fortunately, the showers stayed light and ended just about the time the graduates started parading in.  We didn’t get out of there until almost 11pm but it was worth it.  Have to confess that I spent a good portion of the time crying.  Not sure exactly what all the tears were for, but I’m pretty certain there was an element of relief involved – relief from the drain on my pocketbook (at least temporarily)!  Now, if my daughter can just find a job…:-).

Speaking of job hunts, here is the recording from last week’s call.  Rick and I devoted the entire hour to answering job search questions.  We covered a lot of ground so I hope you find your question in the mix.  If not, don’t give up.  Each week we try to get to one or two others that have not yet been addressed.  And it doesn’t hurt for you to resubmit your question, so feel free to do so.

Call #14: Answering Your Questions

This coming week, we are going to focus on 2 topics: 1) How to deal with discouragement in the job search, and 2) Finding your ideal career.  Trying to find a job can start to wear on you after awhile so we want you to be prepared to handle it.

We hope you can be with us on Tuesday at 7pm!

Accessing the Hidden Job Market

Hi, All!

Rick and I just finished tonight’s call where we discussed many different ways to find the ~60% of jobs that are usually referred to as "hidden".  Not that anyone is trying to keep you in the dark.  It’s just that these are the jobs that never end of getting posted anywhere.  But have no fear – they CAN be found!  If you missed the call, you can learn the tips we shared by clicking on the link below.   Any questions? Comments?  Additions?  Please let us know what you think!

Call #13: Accessing the Hidden Job Market

We also had several great questions submitted that we couldn’t get to in the time allotted.  So next week, we are going to devote the entire hour to answering as many of them as we can get to.  We hope you’ll join us – and tell your friends!

Tonight’s Teleseminar (May 5)

Thank you to all who participated on tonight’s call!  I hope that you find that what we discussed will make your next "landing" more successful.  It’s hard enough going through the job search process once.  You don’t want to have to repeat it any more times than absolutely necessary.

For those who missed the call, here is the link to the recording.

Call #12: You Found a Job – Now What?

As we mentioned at the end of the call, next week we are going to cover the subject of "hidden job market".   It’s been said that at least 60% of all the available jobs are never posted anywhere.   And because they are not posted for the world to see, there isn’t much competition for them.  But the challenge is finding them. So Rick and I are going to tell you how.  I hope you will be able to join us!

Playing Catch Up:-)

OK. I admit it – I’m WAAAY behind on this blog.  In my defense, I’ve been working with a designer to improve the look and functionality of this site.  You should be seeing the changes very soon.  With these changes, we will be adding two new features that should better support you in your job search.  The first new section will be "The Coach’s Corner", where I will be answering specific questions that readers/listeners have submitted.  Along with this, we will also be adding a "Featured Job Postings" area where we can regularly highlight active postings for various types of positions.

We hope that these revisions will make this site more useful and help get the kind of dialogue going that can benefit everyone.

In the meantime, here are the replays from the previous two teleseminars.

Last week, on April 21st, Rick and I focused on Cover Letters and Thank You Notes.  In addition, we also answered more of the questions that had been sent in.

Call #11: Cover Letters, Thank You Notes, References + More Questions

The previous week (April 14), I was joined by Doug Thorpe, the founder and leader of Jobs Ministry Southwest.  This new and growing ministry meets every Tuesday morning in SugarLand.  Doug explained the STRIVE model for job search that is taught at JMS.  This very easy-to-follow approach has already been used successfully by numerous job seekers.

Call #10:  S.T.R.I.V.E. to Thrive in Your Job Search and Career

As always, we welcome your comments and questions.
